300 Years of the Spalding Gentlemen's Society
Spalding Gentlemen's Society was founded in 1710 by Maurice Johnson. Maurice was a native of Spalding and a Lawyer who spent much of his time working in London. There he took part in many of the organisations associated with the Enlightenment, such as the Royal Society and the Society of Antiquities. He started the Gentlemen's Society with a group of his friends in Spalding to meet weekly and discuss intellectual subjects - Science, Arts and Literature
