Portsmouth Choral Union perform Christmas Oratorio by J.S Bach

Portsmouth Choral Union are joined by Southern Pro Musica and will be performing
Christmas Oratorio by J.S Bach
Conductor: David Gostick
Assistant Musical Director: Ian Richardson

The Christmas Oratorio, BWV 248, completed around Christmastime of 1734, is not an oratorio in the usual sense, instead it was conceived as a set of six cantatas. The six parts of his Christmas Oratorio were performed on separate days, but we will perform all except part 4 in one evening. The story begins with the birth of Jesus (for Christmas Day). The second and third parts feature the shepherds (for December 26 and 27). The fourth part describes the naming and circumcision of Jesus (for New Year’s Day). The fifth and sixth parts describe the Three Kings, or Magi (for the first Sunday after New Year and for Epiphany).
