The Grand Duke

The University of Portsmouth Dramatic & Musical Society in its 100th anniversary year performs Gilbert and Sullivan's The Grand Duke, with the full University of Portsmouth Orchestra in the pit.

Ernest Dummkopf and his theatrical troupe are preparing to put on a show while at the same time plotting to overthrow the Grand Duke. When Ludwig unwittingly reveals the plan to the Grand Duke’s detective, chaos ensues, and Ludwig soon finds himself engaged to four different ladies.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s last collaboration was not an entirely happy one, but with some careful pruning it is an extremely funny show which features some of Sullivan’s very best music. The orchestra will use band parts specially created from Sullivan’s autograph manuscript; some of the music will be heard for the first time since the premiere in 1896.
