Short Course: Visible Mending
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:
With environmental concerns in mind, we are all being encouraged to mend our clothes rather than throw them away. There is a growing feeling that repairs do not have to be invisible and that we could make them a more attractive statement.
You will be taught the art of Boro work, a Japanese form of repair which incorporates piecing, patching and stitching clothing to extend its life. The term Boro comes from the Japanese boroboro meaning something tattered or repaired. Participants will also be introduced to Sashiko which is a form of stitch and is frequently used repetitively in Boro work. We will also cover simple darning in a visible method enhanced by some hand embroidery.
ABOUT THE TUTOR:
Penny Follows has been teaching textiles for more than 10 years in London and the Home Counties.?She is a bespoke dressmaker with a studio in the Chilterns. Penny believes that sewing is a 'learned skill' and a great creative outlet. She enjoys passing that skill,?and a passion for textiles on to both adults and children.
WHAT TO BRING:
Please bring with you a basic sewing kit to include hand sewing needles, thread, a small pair of sharp scissors, pins, a tape measure and a thimble if you use one.
