The programme features a sequence of accompanied partsongs by Haydn,
shedding some light on his perception of the emotional poetry which had
been emerging from the Sturm und Drang movement in Germany in the
late 18th century.
These are followed by quartets for the choir by Brahms, who a century later,
took these ideas a step further with some deeply Romantic interpretations.
