'Tennyson's Cornwall and Idylls of the King
Society for Lincolnshire History & Archaeology (SLHA)
Saturday July 9th 2022 at 3.00pm
Annual Brackenbury Lecture organised jointly with the Tennyson Society
‘Tennyson’s Cornwall and Idylls of the King:
Poetic Research and the Diffusion of Celtic Culture’
Presented by Dr J Cheshire, University of Lincoln
The lecture will discuss Tennyson’s tours of Cornwall in 1848 and 1860 and how this informed the genesis of Idylls of the King. Dr Cheshire will argue that Tennyson simultaneously popularised and diluted the Celtic roots of Arthurian literature and that the way Victorian culture co-opted Tennyson’s poem, merged the myth with the growing admiration for the Anglo-Saxons.
Lecture will commence at 1500 and finish at 1630hrs
Admission by donation to include Afternoon Tea – no need to book
