This concert is a collection of highly-charged and varied pieces sharing an intensity which it is hard to imagine being expressed by any other medium than through music. Webern wrote his Langsamer Satz (slow movement) after the 21-year-old composer had been on a five-day hiking tour of the Austrian countryside. Ravishingly romantic, it has been described as ‘Tristan and Isolde compressed into 11 minutes’. Also partly inspired by the open air, we hear some of Janacek’s short pictures infused with Moravian folk melodies and Sally Beamish’s ‘The Gala Water' variations, based on a Scottish folk tune. Norwegian composer Halvorsen’s take on a Handel passacaglia reveals a scintillating set of virtuosic variations for two players. We honour the people of Ukraine by playing Loboda’s Requiem - a short solo violin tribute dedicated to the victims of the conflict in 2014 inspired by a folksong about the river Dneiper. The ever joyous quartet which Dvorak wrote whilst visiting the Czech immigrant community in deepest Iowa is deservedly one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire.
