Perhaps Haydn’s most popular quartet opens this programme. It is known by the nickname ‘Lark’ - a happy label not from the composer’s own pen but applied as a result of the soaring opening tune in the first violin. After its first performance in England the quartet earned an alternative sobriquet,’the Hornpipe’, due to a whirlwind of a final movement. Nicknames suggest happy audiences and there is good reason to love this wonderful quartet. The work delights me as if I were writing a grand symphony” wrote Dvorak to his publisher when writing his Miniatures for 2 violins and viola and indeed the pleasure Dvorak took in crafting this music is apparent in every bar. Small in stature these pieces may be but they display the composer at his most intimate and heartfelt. In our journey through the late Beethoven quartets we meet the great E flat quartet Op 127. His first quartet for some 10 years, he now seems to fathom depths of expression which transcend the norm expected from a mere string quartet.
