“William Lee and the Hosiery Industry in Calverton”

Over 400 years ago, during the Elizabethan era, William Lee of Calverton invented the framework knitting machine; this became the basis for an important cottage industry for several hundred years afterwards. Lee’s invention is still at the core of the computer-controlled machinery used in the worldwide hosiery industry today.
