The 2023 John Fussell Award for Young Musicians

See the Young Musicians of Tomorrow Perform on 14 June 2023

At 7.30pm on Wednesday 14 June at the Taliesin Arts Centre, the exciting final of the John Fussell Award for Young Musicians is being held. This concert is FREE so why not go along and see if you can spot a future music superstar - as has happened several times before!

The finalists who will compete this year for the first prize of £2,500 (£450 to each of the three runner ups) are:

Grace Gill-Hope (soprano) Grace grew up in Cardiff and when not studying at The Royal Academy in London loves to return to Cardiff and sing for the residents of her local residential home or play the piano in her church

Samuel Willsmore (oboe) is from Essex and is enjoying his studies at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, as well as discovering and performing Welsh music with his quintet The Bute Quintet

Isabelle Harris (flute) was raised in Pontypridd, South Wales and began learning the flute while at primary, school. Now studying at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, she enjoys relaxing doing yoga and exploring London’s parks.

Anna Phillips (harp) is from West Wales and loves to go walking in the beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside when her studies at the Royal Academy of Music allow.

Each finalist will give a 15minute recital before the winner is chosen by a panel of eminent musicians made up of organist and chair Huw Tregelles Williams OBE, operatic soprano Ellen Williams and orchestral contractor and percussionist Dave Danford.

John Fussell was a well-known figure in the South Wales music scene from 1970 until his death in 1990, following which a Trust Fund was set up, in his memory, to support young musicians with links to Wales to further continue their studies.
This event is FREE but ticketed to comply with Health and Safety Regulations, so please reserve your tickets in advance or collect on the night at the Taliesin Box Office (Tel. 01792 602060).
