Waterway Recovery Group (North-West) Canal Restoration Dig

The Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal used to run from the River Irwell in Salford to wharves in Bolton and Bury but has been largely derelict since a major breach near Little Lever in 1936. Campaigning for its restoration commenced in 1987 and a number of lengths have been restored. Waterway Recovery Group (North-West), part of the national charity the Inland Waterways Association, will be joining the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal Society to undertake work to help promote further re-opening. The day will be based at Nob End, the site of a spectacular flight of locks raising the canal from the Irwell valley to the Bolton-Bury level and close to the site of the breach. Details of the work await permissions from the canal's owners, the Canal and River Trust, but seem likely to include at least some of reed clearance, building work (including pointing with lime mortar), fencing and cutting/removing saplings.
There is no charge and work will run from about 10:00 until 17:00 but you can turn up and leave as you wish. There should be facilities to make drinks but you will need to bring your own lunch. We have a limited amount of protective clothing available for loan but please bring any strong gardening gear that you possess.
