Pilgrim Badges; with a particular focus on East Anglian Saints

Part of the Abbey 1000 – all monies raised go towards collections conservation care and artefact acquisitions.

Pilgrim badges are common metal-detecting finds with several hundred recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme – a project to record archaeological finds made by the public.

They represent many saint’s cults and were bought by pilgrims visiting holy places. It was believed that when these badges were touched upon saint’s relics it would evoke the protection of that saint – with different saints being venerated for their different qualities. This talk will examine some of the badges found in East Anglia, and associated with its saints, including St Edmund.
