Hogarth Singers' summer concert: A choral cosmos

The programme’s theme is A choral cosmos. This year commemorates the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaugh-Williams and so the programme includes his setting of Walt Whitman’s poem Toward the unknown region, together with Henry Purcell’s Come ye sons of art, and Welcome to all the pleasures, alongside contemporary composers Morten Lauridsen’s O nata lux, and Eriks Esenvalds’ Stars.

In addition, the programme will include several instrumental pieces: Claude Debussy’s Clair de lune, on piano, and Gustav Holst’s Venus, from The Planets, arranged for the organ by Arthur Willis. Finally, as a musical link to the Moon, Adagio for strings by Samuel Barber, on organ, as this was played at the funeral of President JF Kennedy, whose vision for travel to the Moon was fulfilled by the first moon landing in 1969.

The choir will be conducted by its Musical Director Rupert Gill. We are pleased that accompanist and soloist (piano and organ) will be Ben Giddens, Director of Music St St James' Church, Sussex Gardens.
Tickets are £14 on the door, £13 in advance. The concert starts at 7.30pm.
