Garden History - the gardens of the Renaissance/Arts & Crafts gardens
Harpenden Learning for Leisure are pleased to offer this 10 week course.
This course will be of two halves, building on ideas mentioned in the Introduction to Garden History last autumn, but looking deeper into two periods. The Italian Renaissance gardens of the Medicis and others and how the ideas and motifs were adapted in English Tudor Gardens will form the first half. After half-term, the Arts and Crafts Gardens will be the focus, looking at the teachings of Ruskin, the examples of Morris and the many good garden designers who took these ideas and moved gradually from gardens to town planning; Lutyens/Jekyll, Mawson and others, leading to our garden cities. There are many good examples of these gardens and towns in Hertfordshire and this course will focus on many of them
