Charcoal Making and Drawing

A unique experience…..Make your own charcoal to create drawings in the beautiful setting of Footprint and National Trust’s St Catherine’s estate in Windermere

What will the session cover and how will it be taught?
Experience the fascinating process of charcoal making and gain an insight into the rich history of this once thriving local industry. Make your own charcoal, under expert guidance and then use this to create drawings from direct observation of the surrounding nature.

Who is it suitable for?
Everyone, including beginners and those more experienced to drawing.

Important Information
A lot of the time will be spent outdoors and will involve some walking on uneven paths and climbing slopes, which could be an issue for those less mobile. Please contact the Creative Learning Team if you wish to discuss any specific needs via email kate.lund@breweryarts.co.uk

What do I need to bring?
Materials are provided but please bring a board to rest paper on

Charcoal can be messy and we will be sitting around a fire so wear appropriate clothing

Please bring equipment for going outdoors:

A stool, folding chair or cushion for outdoor work
Rucksack or bag
Please also be prepared for the weather, so some sturdy shoes and layers to keep warm, waterproofs for wet weather, hats, scarves etc.
Bring a packed lunch. Tea and coffee are provided.
Bear in mind you will be carrying equipment. Travel light!

Cartridge paper
Charcoal
Putty rubber

Location and Access
This course takes place at Footprint, St Catherine’s Woodland, Windermere, a National Trust property. Participants do not need to be National Trust members to attend.
