Natasha Robson: Critical Thinking for a Global Society

Natasha Robson: Critical Thinking for a Global Society

How to know your own mind in a world of endless information and manipulation.

We live in a world of endless information – some of which is reliable; some highly biased; and some completely false– and it is being used to shape our personal behaviours as well as world events. The challenge in identifying problematic information is that it is targeted specifically at our personal biases, because of the data that is harvested about us, individually and en masse. In such a world, the ability to think critically becomes ever-more necessary and important.

In this deep and engaging talk, Doctoral Researcher Natasha Robson will take you on a journey through different aspects of the mind: from processes of meaning-making right up to large-scale cultural conditioning; from the most internal to the broadest external aspects of our thinking, and give you an insight into how you can maintain your personal autonomy and also protect our fragile collective ideal of democracy.

Followed by questions from the floor.

Natasha Robson is a Doctoral Researcher at Reading University and Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, Manufactures and Commerce (RSA). Her thesis traces social commentary through the publications of Allen and Unwin; the publishing house of leading thinkers Walter Lippmann, Bertrand Russell and John Dewey, as well as Roald Dahl and J.R.R. Tolkien. Her research demonstrates the need for a cultural push towards objectivity and criticality in education and everyday thinking, and her work gears towards making the mental processes required for this cultural shift more easily accessible and better understood. She loves learning, art, and being outside.
