Attercliffe, Zion Graveyard

Heritage Open Day: Explore the forgotten burial ground of the now demolished Zion Congregational Church Attercliffe and learn about the origins of Sheffield's oldest recycling firms, founded in 1760 by the grandfather of anti-slavery campaigner Mary Anne Rawson Since a group of local volunteers formed a trust and purchased and saved this small abandoned and overgrown graveyard in 2018, sixty graves have been discovered, many of them belonging to early Sheffield industrialists whose stories are slowly emerging from the shadows of history. We are delighted to have saved the tomb of Mary Anne Rawson and the Read Family whose ancestors founded the Sheffield Smelting Company and whose descendants played an influential role in Sheffield politics and social reform.
