St Leonard's Church, Wortley

Heritage Open Day: Explore the Church and Churchyard. The church dates from 1753 and contains monuments and memorials to the Wortley family (the Earls of Wharncliffe). The church tower will be open for guided tower tours to see the bells and bell ringing on 17/09/22. The imposing Church of St Leonard's in Wortley village was built around 1753 but has been altered and improved over the hundreds of years it has been in use. It serves a rural community covering around 35 square miles. The Church contains interesting memorials providing details about the history of the Wortley family (the Earls of Wharncliffe). There is a particularly fine memorial by John Flaxman dating from 1808. Another memorial is to Lady Mary Wortley Montague.
