Wheels on Fire!

Heritage Open Day: Enjoy an exhibition of artefacts and images depicting wheels, one of the most 'Astounding Inventions' of all time. Dive into the history of water and steam powered wheels in Sheffield. See how the wheel is fundamental to so many traditional crafts. Butcher Works is also known as 'The Butcher Wheel' and is one of many 'Wheels', steam and water driven, which powered craft and industry as it developed and grew in Sheffield. During your visit, you can learn more about our 'Butcher Wheel' and other 'Wheels' and see the beautifully restored red brick buildings and arched ceilings where the Butcher Wheel powered grinding wheels and other machinery. You can see our exhibition 'Wheels on Fire', depicting wheels used in art and craft and a spectrum of wheel-related artefacts.
