Heritage Open Day: Visit our beautiful Grade II Listed Victorian Chapel and newly refurbished Old School House, with exhibition of 100 years of Chapel archive and heritage artefacts, an illustrated talk and an optional the walk to nearby Wincobank Hillfort Built-in 1841 as a school by anti-slavery campaigner Mary Anne Rawson, the land and buildings were left in trust for the benefit of the neighbourhood and have been in continuous use as an independent chapel and
community centre ever since. At 1400 the Lord Mayor of Sheffield will open the newly renovated Old School House, as a long awaited community heritage centre. There is a wealth of fascinating history to be discovered here about the philanthropic Read family, founders of the 260 year old refinery still trading as The Sheffield Smelting Company (Thessco); the Flower Estate; Wincobank Ancient Woodland and the archaeology of the Iron Age Hillfort.
