The Devil Danced in our Eyes

The Devil Danced In Our Eyes is a solo gig-theatre show, combining a singer/songwriter gig, animation and theatre. Writer/performer Jonluke McKie, equipped with his guitar and loop pedal, uses storytelling, original songs and a live soundtrack to tell a semi-autobiographical, coming-of-age story.

Access:
Recommended age suitability: Age 16+

Jamie, a 15-year-old boy living in Rotherham with his single mum, Sharron, is exploring his sexuality online. What begins as a healthy exploration with positive online experiences soon changes after his beloved grandfather passes away. Sharron’s mental health deteriorates fast and Jamie becomes increasingly involved in adult chatrooms where he meets ‘Windor52’.

Lying about his age, he forms a complex, ambiguous friendship with the older man and they agree to meet. When Windsor52 learns the truth he calls things off, but it’s too late as Jamie’s already on his way following a climactic argument with his now frightening and unpredictable mother. Despite Windsors’ protestations Jamie barges into the house, where he is subsequently assaulted and in self-defence Jamie seriously injures his attacker.

The final scene of the play takes place in a police station. Sharron isn’t better but has gathered herself enough to be there for her son in his time of crisis; mother and son are once again the
supportive family of two they have always been. Underscored with a live soundtrack of looped body and voice percussion, guitar and haunting vocals, the piece is further enhanced with animation projected onto the performer and set, offering insight into Jamie’s inner and online experience.
