Songs of Farewell: Choral Music for a time of mourning

Excalibur Voices presents a programme suitable for a time of national mourning, where heavenly peace is the solace for earthly grief.

All profits are going to Help Musicians UK, whose patron was Queen Elizabeth II, and all musicians are donating their time.

The concert features two pieces with a strong royal connection. It opens with Purcell's Funeral Sentences, composed for the funeral of Queen Mary II in 1695. My Soul, There is a Country by CH Parry was recently sung at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey. This piece is from Parry's Songs of Farewell, which makes up the heart of the programme, a set composed during the First World War when many of Parry's students were at war and being killed or injured. Like many of the pieces featured in the concert, here the composer envisages heavenly peace as solace for earthly grief.

Around this core, Excalibur Voices will sing choral music from largely British composers, including Tudor composers William Byrd and John Sheppard and Edwardian composers Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams, with a couple of less familiar pieces from Portugese composer Alonso Lobo and Zoltan Kodaly
