Emily Abdy curates: Vox
Associate Composer Emily Abdy brings together a line-up of artists writing innovative and original music with voice. Abdy’s curated event toys with the boundaries between composition and songwriting, “popular” and contemporary classical music, showcasing innovative approaches to sound across the experimental music scene.
“I want to highlight artists who strike me as raw, honest voices, using words and sound to deliver a resounding sentiment.
Opening the Birmingham event is Abdy’s work Ruminant for violin and spoken word, performed by Sean Morrison. Transcribed from an earlier version for viola, the score tasks a single performer with recounting an inner-monologue while playing their instrument.
Much like Abdy herself, artist Chloe Knibbs’ creative practice has one foot rooted in classical composition and the other in singer-songwriting. Chloe presents a set of original music exploring loss, memory, relationships and self.
Sonic entity enjika make their debut performance, weaving evocative lyrics and intimate acoustic arrangements with found sound and modular synths to convey a tumultuous narrative. The night closes with a set from Blue Ruth, a vocalist and electronic artist with a distinct approach to sound – expect noisy, synth-led industrial music with a pinch of post-punk sensibilities.
