Alien Native

Alien Native is a specially commissioned new artwork created by duo Heinrich & Palmer to celebrate the opening of Gosport Museum and Art Gallery. This video artwork is inspired both by plants growing locally in the Gosport area and Hampshire Cultural Trust’s herbarium collection, which includes botanical specimens dating as far back as the 18th century.

The exhibition explores Gosport’s non-native, or alien, plants, introduced by human activity, and their native counterparts, which are either indigenous species, or arrived ‘naturally’ in Britain and Ireland following the end of the Ice Age. By researching the archive and retracing the steps of original collectors to various sites, the artists have explored our current understanding of the biodiversity of the area.

Combining ultra high-speed film of scenarios set up in the studio with footage captured in the Gosport area, the work presents a unique and fascinating narrative. Visitors will follow a disparate group of plants on an imaginary and sometimes turbulent journey through a series of environments towards the realms of the herbarium archive. The work reveals the subtle nature and movements of plant life and our attempts to capture, study and understand it.

The film installation is projected onto a suspended screen and shown at a height of over six metres, presenting the viewer with an extraordinary sense of scale and movement. Accompanied by a soundscape developed from recordings made in the field, the evocative sounds of the Hampshire countryside are brought into the gallery. Together, the moving image and sound create an immersive and otherworldly experience not to be missed.
