Christmas in the Chapel
Christ’s Hospital Choral Society is delighted to present this year’s Christmas concert, featuring four pieces of the Christmas Oratorio by Bach. There will also be solo performances, a number of traditional carols – and of course carols for the audience to join in with!
The oldest carol we know, ‘Angel’s Hymn’, is from 129AD, and new carols are still written today.
There is a strong link with national and family traditions, but carols are regarded primarily as related to Christian beliefs.
During Johann Sebastian Bach’s time Christmas was celebrated on the 25th, 26th, and 27th of December and of course there was the Advent period as well as the days leading up to Epiphany on 6 January.
Bach’s Christmas Oratorio has six parts to match the different phases of the Christmas period of which the Choral Society will perform four pieces.
The festive, emotional, and heartening quality of the Christmas Carols ensures their ongoing popularity. Christ’s Hospital Choral Society would love to invite you to celebrate Christmas in the Chapel and join in with the signing of this beautiful seasonal music.
