Bexhill Choral Society presents… Mendelssohn’s Elijah at the De La Warr Pavilion
on Saturday 2nd May at 7.30 pm
Felix Mendelssohn’s famous and breath-taking oratorio brings to life the dramatic biblical story of the prophet Elijah. Written for the 1846 Birmingham Music Festival and hailed as a triumph, this masterpiece remains as popular today – in fact it served as the concluding concert of last year’s Edinburgh Festival at the Usher Hall. The score combines Baroque grandeur with gorgeous Romantic orchestration, and is packed with thrilling choruses, lyrical solos and dramatic orchestral passages, building to a fiery climax with Elijah’s ascent to heaven in a flaming chariot.
Bexhill Choral Society will be accompanied by the Sussex Concert Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Roberts and the soloists will be Peter Grevatt (baritone), Kristian Thorkildsen (tenor), Louisa Hunter-Bradley (mezzo-soprano) and Kristy Swift (soprano).
