Our programme begins with the genius of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor dubbed the “African Mahler.” Born in Holborn in 1875 to an English mother and a father originally from Sierra Leone, he identified as Anglo-African. Raised in a family of keen musicians the boy’s talent was encouraged and he entered the Royal College of Music at the tender age of 15. His Ballade in A minor was completed only a year after his graduation following the support of his mentor Edward Elgar who proposed him for the commission.

The first performance was critically acclaimed, the Daily Graphic noting the Ballade was ‘full of excitement and charm’, while The Times praised its ‘beauty of tone-colour’.
A melodic piece, with echoes of the great European Romantics, Ballade was immediately successful.

Our next piece is Symphony No 1 in C by Mily Balakriev. He was born in 1837 and became a leading influence in a movement known as the “mighty five’. Their aim was to renew Russian art music through the inclusion of Russian folklore. The symphony is packed full of life and colour.

Balakriev was a great friend and inspiration for our next composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, born 1840.

It was Balakriev who suggested that Tchaikovsky write a piece inspired by Romeo and Juliet. Sumptuous melodies are woven together, and various tunes depict the drama, romance, and tragedy of the ill-fated lovers. Composed in 1869 Tchaikovsky dedicated the piece to Balakriev and received much critical support from him. This is now one of Tchaikovskys most enduring and popular musical pie
