Wantage Orchestra- East Oxford Community Choir & Headington Singers

Wantage Orchestra Autumn Concert
Vaughan Williams' A Sea Symphony
T?he Wantage Orchestra joins forces with two choirs, East Oxford Community Choir and Headington Singers, to perform Vaughan Williams' major choral work A Sea Symphony.
The conductor will be James Longstaffe and the choir and orchestra together will be around 130 performers.
Note that this concert is also being performed on Sat 3 December at 7.30 pm: St Andrew’s Church Linton Rd, Oxford OX2 6UG.

Vaughan Williams, who liked to be called Rafe or RVW, was born in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire. His father died when Rafe was 2½; he and his two siblings were raised by their mother and their aunt who taught him piano and violin.

A Sea Symphony was composed between 1903 and 1909. This period was a turning point in Rafe’s life. He had considered abandoning music altogether until Rafe discovered the Folk Song Society in 1904. After travelling the country collecting folk music, he began to incorporate folksong material into his own compositions. A Sea Symphony is a great example this, you can hear familiar tunes within the monumental choral work.

The text of A Sea Symphony comes from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass and is one of the first symphonies in which a choir is used throughout the work and is an integral part of the musical texture. A Sea Symphony helped set the stage for a new era of symphonic and choral music in Britain during the first half of the 20th century.

We are all very excited to be performing with our guest conductor James Longstaffe. He has worked with Midland Opera, The Oxford Touring Opera and the Oxford Opera Company.

We hope you will join us in a celebration of Rafe Vaughan Williams A Sea Symphony. It’s an epic and ravishing choral symphony, calling for the forces of a full choir alongside the orchestra, and it packs a punch from the very beginning.
