In the magnificent setting of St Albans Cathedral we showcase powerful works for voices with minimal accompaniment from across the centuries.
Fauré’s well-loved Requiem contains some of the most beautiful melodies he ever composed, including the Pie Jesu and In Paradisum.
Claudio Monteverdi’s Dixit Dominus and Beatus Vir blend voices and instruments to achieve a sense of grandeur and uplifting drama.
James MacMillan is one of Britain’s greatest living composers. His piece O Radiant Dawn from the beautiful Strathclyde Motets entreats us to search for  light to lead us out of darkness. Plainscapes by Latvian composer Peteris Vasks is an ethereal piece of vocalisation without words, offering a new approach to modern music that may change some minds.
Numbers by rising star Shruthi Rajasekar plays with the concept that mathematics weaves through everything we do in our daily lives. Our programme concludes with Widor’s Toccata played by Rufus Frowde on the cathedral’s magnificent organ.
