Translations by Brian Friel

Combined Actors of Cambridge perform Brian Friel's modern classic. This highly acclaimed play explores the importance of language to our lives and identity with warmth, passion and humour.

In the remote and fiercely proud rural Irish community in 1833, the English influence seems inevitable and is seen locally as either a personal opportunity or a national threat. When change is accelerated by the arrival of soldiers to impose the King's English as the official language, passions run high. Some welcome the changes - and the dashing young soldiers but for many, this is a loss of identity and national pride that cannot be accepted. A very human and enduring story of hope, love, loyalty and the importance of language to our own identity and independence.
