Highdown Gardens are opening for the National Garden Scheme 15th Feb

On 15th February (10am-4pm) and 31st May (10am-8pm) Highdown Gardens, Worthing are opening in aid of The National Garden Scheme. Admission is by donation to the National Garden Scheme. The National Garden Scheme gives visitors unique access to over 3,500 exceptional private gardens in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands, and raises impressive amounts of money for nursing and health charities through admissions, teas and cake. Thanks to the generosity of garden owners, volunteers and visitors the National Garden Scheme have donated over £67 million to nursing and health charities since they were founded in 1927. In 2022, they donated £3.11 million. Beneficiaries include Marie Curie, Macmillan Cancer Support, Parkinson’s UK, Carers Trust and The Queen’s Nursing Institute.

Highdown Gardens have been maintained by Worthing Borough Council for over 50 years on behalf of Highdown Pleasure Ground and Tower Trust. There are 8½ acres of stunning informal gardens on Sussex chalk downland, overlooking the sea, with a unique collection of rare plants and trees. Many were raised from seed brought from China by great collectors like Wilson, Farrer and Kingdon-Ward.

In 2021, as part of a £1million project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, a visitor centre was opened, sharing the incredible stories of the plants and people that made Highdown what it is today. With new accessible pathways, greenhouses to propagate and protect rare plants and trees, and a sensory garden with a secret sea view, there’s plenty to discover and enjoy at Highdown Gardens.
