‘The long experience of love’: A poet’s view of Rainer Maria Rilke

Dr Mark Burrows presenter

A scholar, teacher, translator and poet, Mark Burrows (who travels from Maine USA to be with us), explores themes posed by the great Austrian poet, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875–1926).

Mark says: “As with many symphonic 'ninths' - Beethoven's, Schubert's or Mahler's, for example - Rilke's Ninth Duino Elegy is one of the epochal achievements of European culture. Here, the poet faces the great themes of mortality, temporality and love, affirming the 'hereness' of life as a transcendence that holds us - and all things. Here, too, he stakes his claim that 'there is neither a here nor beyond, but rather a great unity.' What could this possibly mean? We'll explore this claim in conversation with the poet's stirring call to 'praise the world to the angel, and not what's unsayable. . .’”
