Haydn: String Quartet in C major, Op 74 No 1. Barto´k: String Quartet No 6. Beethoven: String Quartet in F major, Op 59 No 1 ‘Razumovsky’
For our last concert, three great string quartets played by an excellent young prize-winning ensemble. Fe^ted as a superstar on his first visit to London, Haydn ensured his return visit would be even more successful with a brilliant new set of quartets, the first of which opens this programme. Barto´k’s last quartet, composed at the beginning of WWII shortly before he left Hungary for exile in the U.S., is one of his most moving and accessible works. Finally, the most expansive of Beethoven’s wonderful Razumovsky quartets makes a glorious climax to our anniversary season.
