Vespasian and the II Augusta Legion: Adventures in Sussex and beyond

A talk by Dr Miles Russell, Senior Lecturer in Prehistoric and Roman Archaeology at Bournemouth University.

In AD 43 the II Augusta were one of 4 legions tasked by Roman emperor Claudius with the invasion and subjugation of southern Britain. This talk considers the role of the II Augusta legion, looking at ancient written sources and archaeological evidence obtained in Kent, Sussex and Hampshire, putting its activities in the context of Later Iron Age tribes and people, up until the time of the Boudiccan Revolt in AD 60/61. It will also consider the nature of its commander, Vespasian, who brought Sussex and the south under Roman control and whose fortress, at Wimborne Minster in Dorset (where he lived with his family), has recently been fully surveyed.
