Summer Exhibition:Creating a Dream,Maud Messel’s vision for Nymans III
Imagine the house before the fire – the impressive scale, rich decoration, and lavish interiors.
Booking not needed. The event is free but normal admission applies for the venue.
Saturday 3 June to Tuesday 31 October 2023, 11am to 3:30pm.
All the product of one woman’s vision, and taking place across the house, gallery and servant's wing, step into Maud’s imagined studio, to see her vision evolve, and add your own creative spin to Maud’s grand design.
Using 3D techniques, the exhibition will recreate Nymans as it was, complete with vivid colour, specific fabrics and newly acquired objects.
Close to London yet positioned deep in the countryside with views towards Ashdown Forest, Nymans was the Messel family’s rural retreat for weekends and holidays. But the design and look of the house has been altered several times over the years, and the house you see today is a very different one to the Georgian mansion purchased by Ludwig Messel in 1890.
