Chelmsford Singers Summer Concert

The Chelmsford Singers invite you to share an evening of sea, song, and sunshine!

Chelmsford Singers’ Summer concert will be on Saturday, 13th July 2024 at Maldon United Reform Church, Market Hill, Maldon CM9 4PZ, starting at 7.30pm.

Tickets will be £18 in advance and £20 on the door, with under 16s free. Refreshments will be served. Doors open at 7pm. Tickets are available from chelmsfordsingers.co.uk.

Ably conducted by James Davy, this is the first in a series of two concerts celebrating the hundredth anniversary of eminent Anglo-Irish composer Charles Villiers Stanford. Stanford was a highly influential musician, being one of the founders of the Royal College of Music. He created a fine body of musical work, and numbered other important composers among his students, including Gustav Holst and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

The concert will be a celebration of music including Stanford’s exhilarating Songs of the Fleet, which sets poems about sailing to glorious music for baritone soloist and choir, with piano accompaniment from renowned pianist Tim Carey. The choir will also perform Old Joe Has Gone Fishing from Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten and Full Fathom Five by Charles Wood. The programme furthermore includes part songs by Gustav Holst and Stanford. Finally, Joseph Canteloube’s Baïlèro from Songs of the Auvergne will bring some welcome sunshine to the evening.

James Davy has been director of The Chelmsford Singers since 2012 when he was appointed Director of Music at Chelmsford Cathedral and is currently pursuing a freelance career as an organist and conductor across East Anglia.

The Chelmsford Singers have been engaged in quality music making since 1927.
