At the second attempt (the first having been prevented by the Covid lockdown of 2020) the Amici Ensemble, a choir made up of two separate musical entities – The Amici Singers (a women’s voices choir) and the Ensemble of Friends (a mixed voice a cappella group) are coming to Weston-Super-Mare and also giving concerts around Somerset. The concert at All Saints & Holy Saviour Church on Saturday 27 May at 6:00pm will be an eclectic mix of folk songs, songs from the shows, standards from the Gershwin brothers, a bit of Gospel, as well as a dip into classical repertoire including Cherubini and Dunstable.
Those of a certain age will be familiar with the name Douglas Coombes, particularly if they took any of the BBC Radio for Schools programmes while at school – such as Time and Tune or Singing Together, as Douglas was the producer and often, broadcaster, of these widely followed series. Having been a freelance composer and conductor since 1988 he has conducted these two choirs since their inception and has taken them on tour to a number of places within the UK, the USA and Europe. The programme will also feature a solo from their accompanist Trevor Hughes.
