Tour: Georgian Bakewell – Changes in Farming and Industry
Find aout about Bakewell's Georgian past through this guided tour.
Farming began the 18th century in Bakewell as it had for many years. An absentee landlord left his manor to its own devices. Small farms still operated in the town centre and livestock were a daily sight in the streets. The upheaval of enclosure did not affect Bakewell until the early nineteenth century when the Duke of Rutland sought an Act of Parliament to enclose his land.
Quarries and Mines, Machines and Mills – A miniature industrial revolution took place in Bakewell. Henry Watson and Richard Arkwright harnessed the power of the River Wye to drive machinery and produce quality goods swiftly. Quarries provided stone for Josiah Wedgewood’s porcelain production. They changed the face of employment in Bakewell, increasing the population substantially to fill the jobs which emerged.
This guided walk of about 1 ½ hours visits the sites of Georgian quarries and mills, the houses that were farms 200 years ago and considers the effects the Georgians had upon our small town.
It is part of a series of two special tours offered as part of Derbyshire Georgian Festival 2023.
