WMSO are pleased to present their first chamber concert, comprising of pieces for main sections of the orchestra: Strings, Wind and Brass - and from widely different eras of music.
Britten's simple symphony for strings is one of his earliest pieces, written when he was only 20 and, reworking some tunes that he had written as a child, completed it in 1933. Gounod's Petite Symphonie is scored for a nonet of wind instruments and was written late in his life around 1885, and is full of wit and musical maturity. Gabrieli wrote a wide range of religious music during his life (1557 - 1612), and was particularly influential as Baroque music was developed and established. His brass ensemble music is particularly well known.
