50th Anniversary Steam Gala
Celebrate at our 50th Anniversary Steam Gala from Thursday 21 to Sunday 24 September 2023.
It's exactly 50 years since we started running passenger services at the NYMR, and this year's Gala is going to be a celebration of the last 50 years with a selection of steam locomotives visiting the railway. Join us as we have up to 12 locomotives in steam over the weekend for this fantastic four-day event.
Ride behind our guest locomotives and home fleet engines across the four days with services calling at Pickering, Levisham, Newtondale Halt (by request), Goathland, Grosmont and Whitby stations.
Visiting Locomotives
We're pleased to announce that the first of our visiting locomotives will be LNER A4 pacific locomotive 'Sir Nigel Gresley' in BR Blue livery, which is arriving on Thursday 21st but will be in action from 22nd - 24th, thanks to the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust. The second guest locomotive that has been announced is the Great Central Railway and David Clarke Railway Trust’s BR Standard Class 9F 2-10-0 No. 92214. The third visiting locomotive is No. 75069, thanks to Severn Valley Railway and The 75069 Fund.
Other Activities
During the weekend stations along the line will be hosting exciting events of their own such as the Annual Steam Gala Beer Festival which sees Goathland (Thu 1130-1800 & Fri-Sun 1130-2300 tbc) and Levisham (Thu & Sun 1100-1900 and Fri & Sat 1100-2300 tbc) offering a wide selection of real ales from local breweries. Station Tea Rooms and Levisham Tea Hut will be open for refreshments.
We are pleased to be welcoming back Scarborough and District Railway Modellers during the 50th Anniversary Steam Gala. They will be in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station.
The Dame Vera Lynn Fundraising Group will also be in the Learning Centre on Platform 2 at Pickering Station. Pop along and see what progress is being made on the locomotive and how you can support its overhaul.
