Bampton and its Railway 1873-1962

An exhibition by DAVID PALFREYMAN, OBE FRSA MA (Oxon)

Bampton Community Archive’s latest exhibition celebrates the history of the Bampton and Brize Norton Railway.

The railway that served Bampton for some ninety years until 1962 came into being in two phases:
1861 saw Witney linking to Oxford via a spur from the Oxford-Birmingham main line at Yarnton, calling also at Eynsham; while 1873 saw another train company extending the line from Witney to Fairford as the East Gloucestershire Railway (EGR).

Find out more about its fascinating history and read some first-hand accounts from passengers who used the railway.

The exhibition runs from Sep 11th – Nov 26th inclusive.
