Finds from the Eastern Parishes
Burghfield (‘open land by the hill’) and Wokefield ('Wocca's field') were recorded in Domesday, although the parish of Wokefield was not created until the 20th century. Beech Hill (‘hill with beech trees’) parish was created in 1868. The history of these areas, however, is much older. Local people for decades have been discovering archaeological objects dating back thousands of years. This talk by Dr Philip Smither includes just some of the hundreds of finds discovered in the area in the last few decades.
Dr Philip Smither is the Finds Liaison Officer for Berkshire who regularly records publicly found archaeological objects on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database.
