Concert- Windsor and Eton Choral Society Concert
Please come and enjoy our Windsor and Eton Choral Society Concert in the lovely setting of Eton College Chapel on Saturday 13th January 2024 at 7.30pm. Wheelchair access is available if requested.
This is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy some fantastic music by Vierne, Purcell, Walton and Howell. Please just watch the YouTube recording made recently at King Charles’s Coronation of Walton’s Coronation Mass. We are sure you will want to come to experience the live performance of this dramatic piece.
Vierne - “Messe Solennelle”
The Messe solennelle (Solemn Mass) in C-sharp minor, Op. 16, is a mass by the French composer Louis Vierne. He composed it in 1899, scored for choir and two organs. Purcell - “Funeral Music for Queen Mary”
November 1694 was a busy month for Purcell. First, the triumphant return to London of King William III from the campaign in Flanders saw the composer produce a new anthem depicting the vanquishing of the King’s enemies. However, the triumph was to be short-lived. On December 28th that year Queen Mary died of smallpox and Purcell was called upon to write the Funeral Music.
We are performing this music as a tribute to our late, beloved Queen Elizabeth.
Walton - “Coronation Te Deum”
Walton wrote to a friend, “I've got cracking on the Te Deum. Lots of counter-tenors and little boys Holy-holying, not to mention all the Queen's trumpeters and the side drum”. Walton specialises in triumphant organ choruses and brassy interludes, exemplified in this choral masterpiece.
We are performing this piece in honour of our new King Charles 3rd.
Howells - “Te Deum Collegium Regale”
Howells wrote many settings of the Magnificat and Te Deum, often writing them for the acoustics of a particular building. The choir will be accompanied by Christopher Allsop on organ and The Brandenburg Brass.
