Maxwell String Quartet
Haydn: String Quartet in E flat major, op 20 no 1; Maxwell Quartet: Worksongs (folk music from Scotland); Beethoven: String Quartet in C sharp minor, op 131
The Maxwell Quartet’s much anticipated, pandemic-delayed return to Milngavie showcases their acclaimed Haydn in the first of his wondrous Op 20 quartets. The sublime slow movement, marked ‘tender and sustained’, would alone be worth the concert ticket, but a performance of Beethoven’s C sharp minor quartet is surely unmissable. This great work, which Beethoven himself considered the summit of his achievement in quartet writing, is unsurpassed in its emotional and dramatic scale. It is music that, to borrow Mahler’s phrase, really does ‘embrace the world’.
