European Art 1944-1960: Reactions to World War II, the Holocaust and the Atomic Age Colin Pink - Tuesday 09 April 2024
In this talk we examine the situation of artists in Europe at the end of the Second World War and the exciting diversity of art that emerged in the 1950s ranging from Art Informel (the European equivalent to Abstract Expressionism) to Socialist Realism. We’ll look at the work of Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier, Francis Gruber and Bernard Buffet, Jean Helion and Andre Fourgeron, the Kitchen Sink School in Britain and the new British sculptors such as Lynn Chadwick and Reg Butler, the expressive work of Wols, Jean Fautrier and Henri Michaux, the gestural art of Bram van Velde, Hans Hartung and Pierre Soulages in France and the work of Antoni Tapies and Eduardo Chillida in Spain, Lucio
