Exhibition - Julia Midgley: Drawing a Record

Kirkby Gallery is delighted to announce our new exhibition - Julia Midgley: Drawing a Record, opening 15th April and running until 17th August 2024.

Julia Midgley is a Printmaker and Reportage artist. Over decades of practice, Julia’s drawings have recorded society at large, illustrating her observations on location. By acting as a fly on the wall, events are recorded as they take place in Julia’s sketchbooks, as she does not use a camera, preferring to draw live action directly onto paper.

The works in this exhibition focus on Julia’s projects in Knowsley and the Liverpool City Region. For example, for the 2002 Biennial she made drawings of life in and around Huyton Village and in 2021, Julia returned to Knowsley as part of the Art in the Park project, a collaborative, lockdown project between Knowsley’s Culture Service and Knowsley Safari and again in 2022, as part of the Knowsley Borough of Culture project, Kirkbyography. Julia has created work in Merseyside for well over 35 years and this exhibition is a celebration of her talent and her commissions.

On Friday 26th April we have a free walk and talk around the exhibition with Julia.
If you would like to draw with Julia, we are running a full day drawing workshop Tuesday 14th May 10.30 – 3.30pm. The cost is £40 for the day. Please contact the gallery to book on either of these events.
Kirkby Gallery is open Monday - Friday 10am - 4.30pm, and Saturday 10 - 1pm.
Entry is free.
