St George & the Dragon Mummers' Play
The original street theatre, Mummers’ Plays were often accompanied by a Morris or Sword Dance. There are numerous traditional Mummers’ Plays, one of which is St. George and the Dragon, usually performed at the spring equinox. We perform Billericay's on the Saturday closest to St. George's Day. The current form of this Mummers’ Play stems from the time of the Third Crusade in the twelfth century when the popularity of the legend of St. George and the Dragon was at its height. The play’s meaning is still plain - Good overcomes Evil. What better message!
Two performances: 10.30 and 11.15 a.m. both totally FREE.
