Historical Importance of the River Waveney to Bungay
Heritage Open Day: Bungay, known as Little London in the late 1800s, was a major trader and textile producer. The river gradually became un-navigable which led to loss of trade for Bungay. There will be displays, talks and 'hands on' exhibits. The River Waveney has played an important part in the economy of Bungay. Up to the beginning of the 1900s the river was used to transport raw materials to Bungay and to take finished products away. In the 1930s to boost the economy it was decided to promote tourism and the first planned event was the 'importance' of the myth of the Black Dog. The River is one of the top UK venues for canoeing and paddle boarding. There will be exhibits and activities to build replicas of barges which came to Bungay
