Charles Dickens' Birthplace Museum Open Day

Heritage Open Day: Get free entry to the home where the great Victorian author Charles Dickens was born - and which now contains many of his prized personal possessions. Visit the first home of one of England’s most famous and best-loved writers. The humble terraced house on Portsmouth's Old Commercial Road is where Dickens was born - during the time when his father worked as a clerk at the nearby dockyard.
Now a museum, the home has been decorated in the Regency style favoured by Dickens' parents, and contains many of his own personal possessions. These include a letter opener and the couch on which he died at Gad's Hill in Kent.
On 12 and 14 September the museum will throw open its doors for free as part of Heritage Open Days. It will provide visitors the chance to see inside Dickens' first home and stand where literary history was made.
