Martlesham Heath Remembrance Service

Martlesham Heath ‘Service of Remembrance’ Sunday 9th November starting at 2.30pm organised by The Martlesham Heath Aviation Society on the Barrack Square Martlesham Heath, IP5 3RF (just past the entrance to BT Adastral Park).
Music will be provided by Martlesham Brass.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Service to remember all those who died in all wars for our freedom.

The 356th Fighter Group (FG) Memorial on the Barrack Square Martlesham Heath was the first memorial raised to the American dead after the end of WW2 and has the names and rank of the 72 killed while stationed at RAF Martlesham Heath. There was another service man killed but it was too late for his name to be included.
The Memorial was the idea of Captain Eric Harvey and his wife. They opened their house in Little Bealings as a hospital for injured USAAF personnel from the 356th FG.
Captain Harvey logged details of all 72 American deaths and after the end of WW2 started a collection in the local area in order to raise a lasting Memorial. Collecting no more than 6d from each house, he quickly raised enough for the Memorial which was dedicated in June 1946.
We also remember the sacrifice of Royal Flying Corps and RAF personnel at Martlesham, which included members of the Commonwealth and Dominion Air Forces, Scientists, and members of the public, on two other memorials raised by the Society, which also used contributions from others in the Martlesham and surrounding areas.
