The concert programme, conducted by Bene't Coldstream, features the rarely performed Buxtehude piece in the first half and a wide variety of Eastertide-appropriate choral pieces in the second half. Refreshments will be available in the interval.
First half:
Membra Jesu Nostri by Buxtehude
accompanied by String Ensemble and David Della Valle on continuo.
Composed in 1680, the medieval mystical poetry that this work is based on contemplates the body of the crucified Christ covering feet, knees, hands, sides, breast, heart & face, in 7 sections.
This performance will include 6 of the 7 cantatas within the work.
The many soloists and vocal ensemble singers are from within the choir.
The second half includes Easter-appropriate pieces by Byrd, Lauridsen, Makaroff, Rutter, Todd & Trotta.
St Mary's Church, where the choir is singing music featuring medieval poetry, is renowned for its medieval graffiti.
